Man United 2 Sheff United 0
Manchester United 2 Sheffield United 0, Old Trafford, English Football League First Division, October 2, 1971. Following a 2-2 draw with Liverpool at Anfield, Manchester United defeated leaders Sheffield United 2-0 at Old Trafford. Northern Ireland international George Best gave United the upper hand in the 89th minute before Alan Gowling scored a second with just a few seconds left on the watch.
In the last meeting between Manchester United and Sheffield United at Old Trafford on the 20th of April 1968, Matt Busby´s side had edged out the South Yorkshire club by a 1-0 margin courtesy of an early goal from Scotland international Denis Law in the fifth minute of the First Division encounter. On this occasion, recently appointed Manchester United manager Frank O´Farrell had to make do without the physical presence of the Scottish striker who was out with a thigh problem and he was replaced by left winger John Aston. Surprise team Sheffield United, who had won promotion to the First Division the previous season, were dangerous in the first frame of the clash, but David Sadler and his fellow defenders kept the visitors at bay before the half-time break. Manchester United came back a lot stronger in the second period and with only one minute left of normal time George Best provided The Reds the lead after a fantastic individual display which saw the Northern Irishman beat five rivals and place the ball past Bramall Lane goalkeeper John Hope and into the far bottom corner of the net. Stockport born Alan Gowling then doubled the advantage for the home side when the marksman found the back of the net during stoppage time as he headed an accurate cross from Brian Kidd into the bottom right corner of the goal to complete a 2-0 home victory against Sheffield United, a result which meant that Farrell´s troops were now just one point behind The Blades, and one point above Derby County in third position.
