Manchester United, who came fresh from a 3-2 home victory over Chelsea, put themselves into an early lead thanks to Bobby Charlton who found the net after just three minutes. Blackburn Rovers levelled the score through a goal from defender Jack Bray in the 48th minute of the game, but The Reds regained the advantage when Albert Quixall beat Ewood Park goalkeeper Fred Else from the penalty spot ten minutes later. Quixall went on to complete his brace in the 59th minute before two goals from former Arsenal striker David Herd in the 75th and 78th minutes and one from Maurice Setters in the 88th minute made the final score 6-1 in favour of the hosts.
