Af­ter dis­pens­ing of Sec­ond Di­vi­sion te­am Pre­ston North End in the pre­vi­ous ro­und of the com­pet­i­tion, Matt Busby´s Man­chester Uni­ted suc­cumbed to a 3-1 de­feat at the hands of FA Cup hold­ers Tot­ten­ham Hot­spur at Hills­bor­ough in Sheffield. 

Man­chester Uni­ted fou­nd them­selves a goal down in the fourth min­ute of the semi fi­nal when Jim­my Greaves be­at Da­vid Gaskell wi­th a trade­mark fin­ish. The Man­cuni­ans push­ed hard for an equal­iser, but in­stead it was The Li­ly­whites who mo­ved fur­ther in front as Cliff Jones con­ver­ted a cross from John White in the 24th min­ute of the ga­me. Da­vid Herd, who had joi­ned Man­chester Uni­ted from Ar­senal at the be­gin­ning of the 1961-62 sea­son, ma­naged to re­duce the de­fi­cit for The Reds in the 82nd min­ute, on­ly for Welsh in­ter­na­tion­al Terry Med­win to score a third goal for the White Hart Laners when the wing­er head­ed ho­me five min­utes la­ter.
