After dispensing of Second Division team Preston North End in the previous round of the competition, Matt Busby´s Manchester United succumbed to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of FA Cup holders Tottenham Hotspur at Hillsborough in Sheffield.
Manchester United found themselves a goal down in the fourth minute of the semi final when Jimmy Greaves beat David Gaskell with a trademark finish. The Mancunians pushed hard for an equaliser, but instead it was The Lilywhites who moved further in front as Cliff Jones converted a cross from John White in the 24th minute of the game. David Herd, who had joined Manchester United from Arsenal at the beginning of the 1961-62 season, managed to reduce the deficit for The Reds in the 82nd minute, only for Welsh international Terry Medwin to score a third goal for the White Hart Laners when the winger headed home five minutes later.
