Newcastle 3 Man United 0
Newcastle United 3 Manchester United 0, St James´ Park, English Football League, January 4, 2012. Following a 3-2 defeat at home to Blackburn Rovers, Manchester United suffered another blow as they lost 3-0 to Newcastle United away. Sir Alex Ferguson´s title chasers had a number of decent chances during the clash, but they still ended up on the losing side.
Newcastle United, so vibrant at home during the 2011-12 campaign, were a far better team than Manchester United. In the 33rd minute of the contest, the North Easterners went into a well deserved 1-0 lead as Nigerian striker Shola Ameobi flicked a long ball onto Senegal international Demba Ba whose powerful effort left United shot stopper Anders Lindegaard completely helpless. To the despair of the travelling Manchester United supporters, Alan Pardew´s men managed to double their lead two minutes into the second half when dynamic midfield playmaker Yohan Cabaye scored with a magnificent free-kick from some 25 yards out. Then, in the 90th minute of action, unfortunate United defender Phil Jones deflected the ball into the back of his own net to make the final score 3-0 in favour of the home side. After losing to The Magpies, Manchester United were now three points behind inner-city adversaries Manchester City, who were topping the table with 48 points from 20 games.
