New­castle Uni­ted, so vi­brant at ho­me dur­ing the 2011-12 cam­paign, were a far bet­ter te­am than Man­chester Uni­ted. In the 33rd min­ute of the con­test, the North East­ern­ers went in­to a well de­served 1-0 lead as Ni­geri­an stri­ker Shola Ameo­bi flicked a long ball onto Seneg­al in­ter­na­tion­al Demba Ba who­se power­ful ef­fort left Uni­ted shot stop­per An­ders Linde­gaard com­pletely help­less. To the des­pair of the trav­el­ling Man­chester Uni­ted sup­port­ers, Alan Pardew´s men ma­naged to double their lead two min­utes in­to the sec­ond ha­lf when dy­nam­ic mid­field play­maker Yo­han Cabaye sco­red wi­th a mag­ni­fi­cent free-kick from some 25 yards out. Then, in the 90th min­ute of ac­tion, un­for­tu­nate Uni­ted de­fender Phil Jones de­flec­ted the ball in­to the back of his own net to make the fi­nal score 3-0 in fa­vour of the ho­me si­de. Af­ter los­ing to The Mag­pies, Man­chester Uni­ted were now three points be­hind in­ner-city ad­versar­ies Man­chester City, who were top­ping the ta­ble wi­th 48 points from 20 ga­mes.
