Ashley Grimes Profile
Augustine Ashley Grimes, born Dublin, Republic of Ireland, August 2, 1957. Ashley Grimes appeared for Villa United, Stella Maris, and Bohemians before he was brought to Manchester United for an estimated transfer fee of £35,000 in the spring of 1977. After making well over 100 appearances for the club, the midfielder proceeded to play for Coventry City, Luton Town, Club Atletico Osasuna, and Stoke City.
At Manchester United, Ashley Grimes would play alongside fellow Irishmen Paddy Roche, Paul McGrath, Frank Stapleton, and Anthony Whelan in his six-year stay with the Old Trafford outfit. The Dubliner settled in quickly in Manchester, and the versatile playmaker was given his League Division One debut for The Reds by newly hired manager Dave Sexton when he entered the field as a replacement for Stuart Pearson in a 4-1 victory against Birmingham City at St Andrews on the opening day of the 1977-78 campaign, while his first start came in a 3-2 League Cup Second Round defeat against longtime adversaries Arsenal at Highbury on the 30th of August 1977. With United, Grimes notched up 10 goals in 90 Football League appearances, and he was a member of the team which won the FA Cup Final in 1983 following a replay against Jimmy Melia´s Brighton and Hove Albion. At the beginning of the 1983-84 season, after falling out with outspoken Manchester United supremo Ron Atkinson, the midfield dynamo moved on to fellow First Division club Coventry City where he accumulated 32 Football League appearances before he decided to sign for Luton Town with whom he won the Football League Cup in 1988 after a 3-2 success against Arsenal. Following a comparatively short spell at Spanish La Liga side Club Atletico Osasuna, he finished off his professional playing career with Stoke City at the end of the 1991-92 term. A dependable and hard working player, Ashley Grimes also managed to gain eighteen senior caps for the Republic of Ireland after making his full debut for his country in a 4-2 friendly triumph over Turkey at Lansdowne Road on the 5th of April 1978.
