Au­gustine Ash­ley Gri­mes, born Dub­lin, Re­pub­lic of Ire­land, Au­gust 2, 1957. Ash­ley Gri­mes ap­peared for Vil­la Uni­ted, Stella Mar­is, and Bo­hemi­ans be­fore he was bro­ught to Man­chester Uni­ted for an es­tim­ated trans­fer fee of £35,000 in the spring of 1977. Af­ter ma­king well over 100 ap­pear­ances for the club, the mid­fielder pro­ceeded to play for Cov­entry City, Luton To­wn, Club At­letico Os­asuna, and Sto­ke City.

At Man­chester Uni­ted, Ash­ley Gri­mes would play along­side fel­low Ir­ish­men Pad­dy Roche, Paul Mc­Grath, Frank Stapleton, and An­thony Whelan in his six-year stay wi­th the Old Traf­ford out­fit. The Dub­liner settled in qui­ckly in Man­chester, and the ver­sat­ile play­maker was giv­en his Lea­gue Di­vi­sion One de­but for The Reds by new­ly hired man­ager Dave Sex­ton when he entered the field as a re­place­ment for Stu­art Pear­son in a 4-1 vic­tory ag­ainst Birm­ing­ham City at St An­drews on the open­ing day of the 1977-78 cam­paign, whi­le his fir­st start came in a 3-2 Lea­gue Cup Sec­ond Ro­und de­feat ag­ainst long­time ad­versar­ies Ar­senal at High­bury on the 30th of Au­gust 1977. Wi­th Uni­ted, Gri­mes notched up 10 goals in 90 Foot­ball Lea­gue ap­pear­ances, and he was a mem­ber of the te­am which won the FA Cup Fi­nal in 1983 fol­low­ing a re­play ag­ainst Jim­my Melia´s Brighton and Hove Al­bion. At the be­gin­ning of the 1983-84 sea­son, af­ter fall­ing out wi­th out­spoken Man­chester Uni­ted su­premo Ron Atkin­son, the mid­field dy­namo mo­ved on to fel­low Fir­st Di­vi­sion club Cov­entry City where he ac­cu­mu­lated 32 Foot­ball Lea­gue ap­pear­ances be­fore he de­cided to sign for Luton To­wn wi­th whom he won the Foot­ball Lea­gue Cup in 1988 af­ter a 3-2 suc­cess ag­ainst Ar­senal. Fol­low­ing a com­par­at­ively short spell at Span­ish La Liga si­de Club At­letico Os­asuna, he fin­ished off his pro­fes­sion­al play­ing ca­reer wi­th Sto­ke City at the end of the 1991-92 term. A de­pend­able and hard work­ing play­er, Ash­ley Gri­mes also ma­naged to gain eight­een seni­or caps for the Re­pub­lic of Ire­land af­ter ma­king his full de­but for his coun­try in a 4-2 friendly tri­umph over Tur­key at Lans­downe Road on the 5th of April 1978.
