The Man­cuni­ans ev­entually went ahead in the 41st min­ute of the clash as ver­sat­ile de­fender John O´Shea fou­nd Welsh in­ter­na­tion­al wing­er Ry­an Gig­gs who­se dev­ast­at­ing shot from eight­een yards out flew pa­st As­ton Vil­la and Den­mark goal­keeper Tho­mas Sor­ensen and in­to the cor­ner of the net. Sum­mer sign­ing Alan Smith al­most doubled the lead for Man­chester Uni­ted wi­th on­ly a min­ute left of the en­counter at Vil­la Park, but his clo­se ran­ge ef­fort hit the cross­bar.
