Af­ter two suc­cess­ive ho­me de­feats ag­ainst Ever­ton and New­castle Uni­ted, Man­chester Uni­ted be­at As­ton Vil­la 3-0 at Vil­la Park. Dan­ny Wel­beck fou­nd the net twice for Uni­ted in the fir­st ha­lf be­fore Tom Clev­erly ad­ded a third goal for the vis­it­ing si­de af­ter the break.

The Vil­lains had not de­feated Man­chester Uni­ted at ho­me in the Pre­mier Lea­gue since a 3-1 tri­umph on the 19th of Au­gust 1995, and once ag­ain they failed to be­at The Reds. In the cor­res­pond­ing fix­ture of the pre­vi­ous cam­paign, Uni­ted had edged out As­ton Vil­la by 3-2 at Vil­la Park cour­tesy of a double by Mex­ic­an stri­ker Javi­er Her­nandez and an own goal from Neth­er­lands in­ter­na­tion­al de­fender Ron Vlaar, but as des­tiny would have it, Chi­charito had be­en ruled out of this clash af­ter pick­ing up an in­jury dur­ing train­ing earli­er in the week. Also out wi­th in­jur­ies were Mi­chael Car­rick, Pat­rice Ev­ra, Mar­ou­ane Fel­laini, Robin van Per­sie, Chris Small­ing, and Ne­manja Vid­ic. Da­vid Moyes´s pro­vi­sion­al squad in­cluded goal­keeper Da­vid de Gea and An­ders Linde­gaard; de­fenders Al­ex­an­der Buttner, Jon­athan Evans, Rio Fer­dinand, and Fa­bio da Silva; mid­field­ers Ry­an Gig­gs, Lu­is Nani, Shinji Ka­gawa, Dar­ren Fletch­er, Oli­veira An­der­son, Tom Clev­er­ley, An­tonio Va­lencia, Ash­ley Young, and Ad­nan Janu­zaj; and for­wards Wil­fried Za­ha, Dan­ny Wel­beck, and Way­ne Rooney.

The Black Coun­try club had their mo­ments early in the fir­st ha­lf, but the ho­me te­am were denied on each oc­ca­sion by Man­chester Uni­ted and Spain U21 goal­keeper Da­vid de Gea. In­stead it was Uni­ted that took the ad­vant­age as Dan­ny Wel­beck slid ho­me the open­er in the 15th min­ute af­ter be­ing set up by An­tonio Va­lencia and the for­ward net­ted ag­ain three min­utes la­ter to pro­vide the vis­it­ors wi­th a 2-0 lead. The fi­nal goal of the ga­me ar­rived in the 52nd min­ute when Way­ne Roo­ney re­leased a thro­ugh pass to the on run­ning Tom Clev­er­ley who slot­ted the ball in­to the net to se­cure a 3-0 win for Man­chester Uni­ted over The Claret and Blue.
