Lea­gue Di­vi­sion Two lead­ers Man­chester Uni­ted suc­cumbed to a 2-0 loss at the hands of fel­low pro­mo­tion con­tenders As­ton Vil­la who­se goals were sco­red by Keith Le­onard and Ray Graydon. 

Ron “Tu­dor” Dav­ies, who entered the field as a sec­ond ha­lf sub­sti­tute for Mick Mar­tin, and Ar­nold Side­bot­tom bo­th made their fi­nal ap­pear­ance for Man­chester Uni­ted in the 2-0 de­feat ag­ainst As­ton Vil­la. Bri­an Green­hoff and his fel­low de­fenders had a tough time ag­ainst The Vil­lains who went in front when a pass from loc­al born stri­ker Keith Le­onard fou­nd free scor­ing wing­er Ray Gray­don who fired a low shot pa­st Man­chester Uni­ted goal­keeper Al­ex Step­ney and in­to the net five min­utes af­ter the break. Stu­art “Pan­cho” Pear­son came clo­se to net­ting for the vis­it­ing te­am shortly af­ter­wards, but his fe­ro­cious clo­se ran­ge ef­fort went just over the cross­bar. As the sec­ond pe­riod of the con­test pro­gressed, As­ton Vil­la doubled their lead when long serving de­fender Char­lie Aitken ma­naged to head ho­me a cor­ner from Gray­don to se­cure a 2-0 win for the hosts.
