Cham­pi­on­ship con­tenders Man­chester Uni­ted had edged out West Brom­wich Al­bion by a nar­row 2-1 mar­gin at The Haw­thorns in their pre­vi­ous Fir­st Di­vi­sion fix­ture, where­as As­ton Vil­la had suc­cumbed to a heavy 3-0 loss at the hands of Ips­wich To­wn at Port­man Road. As­ton Vil­la went ahead in the 20th min­ute of the mat­ch when a good cross de­livered by French in­ter­na­tion­al Didi­er Six, who was ma­king his de­but for The Vil­lains, fou­nd Pe­ter Withe who­se head­er flew pa­st Man­chester Uni­ted cus­todi­an Ga­ry Bai­ley and in­to the net. Spurred on by the goal, the ho­me si­de main­tained the at­tack­ing pres­sure on the vis­it­ors and ma­naged to double their ad­vant­age just five min­utes la­ter wi­th a ha­lf-vol­ley from cent­ral-de­fender Al­lan Evans. The Birm­ing­ham club con­tin­ued to dom­in­ate in the sec­ond ha­lf and had their third goal of the af­ter­noon in the 56h min­ute when Withe head­ed down a cor­ner to Paul Rideout who ham­mered the ball in­to the roof of the net to make the fi­nal score 3-0 to the hosts.
