Aston Villa 3 Manchester United 0, Villa Park, English Football League First Division, October 6, 1984. Manchester United suffered their first defeat of the season as they lost 3-0 to Aston Villa.
Championship contenders Manchester United had edged out West Bromwich Albion by a narrow 2-1 margin at The Hawthorns in their previous First Division fixture, whereas Aston Villa had succumbed to a heavy 3-0 loss at the hands of Ipswich Town at Portman Road. Aston Villa went ahead in the 20th minute of the match when a good cross delivered by French international Didier Six, who was making his debut for The Villains, found Peter Withe whose header flew past Manchester United custodian Gary Bailey and into the net. Spurred on by the goal, the home side maintained the attacking pressure on the visitors and managed to double their advantage just five minutes later with a half-volley from central-defender Allan Evans. The Birmingham club continued to dominate in the second half and had their third goal of the afternoon in the 56h minute when Withe headed down a corner to Paul Rideout who hammered the ball into the roof of the net to make the final score 3-0 to the hosts.
