Belgium 2 Scotland 1
Belgium 2 Scotland 1, Albert Dyserynck Stadium, International Friendly, June 1, 1974. After beating England 2-0 at Hampden Park in the British Home Championship two weeks earlier, Scotland lost 2-1 to Belgium in their penultimate game before the 1974 World Cup tournament in West Germany.
Making his full international debut for Scotland in this match was young central-defender Gordon McQueen. In the previous meeting between Scotland and Belgium, the Scots had edged out the Belgians by 1-0 in an European Championship Qualifier at Pittodrie in Aberdeen on the 10th of November 1971, with John O´Hare netting the winner for the hosts in the sixth minute of the clash. At Albert Dyserynck Stadium in the old city of Bruges, Roger Henrotay put Belgium into the lead in the 22nd minute of the friendly fixture before Jimmy Johnstone managed to equalise for the visiting team six minutes ahead of the half-time break. With some 20 minutes remaining, Willie Morgan replaced Johnstone on the wing and despite coming on late in the encounter, the 29-year-old flanker produced a convincing performance against Raymond Goethals´s side. Raoul Lambert ultimately scored the winner for Belgium, though, when the experienced marksman expertly beat Scotland goalkeeper David Harvey from the penalty spot in the 78th minute after Kenny Dalglish had pushed the always dangerous Paul Van Himst inside the 18-yard area.
