Man­chester Uni­ted, who ar­rived fresh from a 2-0 Pre­mier Lea­gue win over South­ampton at St Mary´s three days earli­er, edged out Birm­ing­ham City 1-0 at St Andrew´s. The win­ning goal of the ga­me came in the 82nd min­ute cour­tesy of Ruud van Nistelrooy. 

Man­chester Uni­ted had plenty of op­por­tun­it­ies in the fir­st ha­lf, but the the vis­it­ors failed to break the de­fens­ive dead­lock. Uni­ted con­tin­ued to dom­in­ate af­ter the break and the vis­it­ing si­de had their win­ner when a de­flec­ted shot from Ruud van Nist­lerooy flew pa­st ho­me goal­keeper Nico Vaesen and in­to the net wi­th eight min­utes left of nor­mal time. Paul Scho­les could have doubled Man­chester United’s lead shortly af­ter­wards, but his left-foot ef­fort went just wide of the tar­get.
