Eng­land had rea­ched the semi fi­nals by de­feat­ing Ar­gen­tina 1-0 cour­tesy of a Ge­off Hurst goal, whi­le Por­tugal had beaten North Korea 5-3 thanks to four goals from Eu­se­bio  and a single by Jose Au­gusto. In front of a crowd of 90,000 spec­tat­ors, Bob­by Charl­ton re­gistered the fir­st goal of the mat­ch wi­th a shot from eight­een yards out on the ha­lf-hour ma­rk. And wi­th ten min­utes left of the ga­me, the Man­chester Uni­ted marks­man sco­red ag­ain when he re­ceived a pass from Mar­tin Peters and smash­ed the ball pa­st goal­keeper Jose Pe­reira and in­to the back of the net. A mere two min­utes la­ter, Eu­se­bio net­ted from the pen­alty spot, but Eng­land held on to win the Wor­ld Cup Semi-Fi­nal by 2-1.
