Man­chester Uni­ted en­countered more prob­lems than ex­pec­ted ag­ainst Pre­mier Lea­gue new­comers Read­ing. Kev­in Doyle gave The Roy­als the lead from the spot early in the sec­ond pe­riod, but a late goal from Cris­ti­ano Ron­aldo res­cued a draw for United. 

Fol­low­ing a goal­less, but en­ter­tain­ing fir­st ha­lf, Read­ing got them­selves in front three min­utes in­to the sec­ond pe­riod when Kev­in Doyle be­at Man­chester Uni­ted goal­keeper Ed­win van Sar from the pen­alty spot af­ter Ga­ry Ne­ville had be­en ruled to have handled the ball in the area by ref­er­ee Pe­ter Walton of Northamp­ton­shire. Uni­ted wor­ked hard for an equal­ising goal and the vis­it­ing si­de suc­ceeded in the sev­enty-third min­ute of the ga­me when Cris­ti­ano Ron­aldo cut in­side from the left to fire a low hard shot across ho­me cus­todi­an Mar­cus Hahne­mann and in­to the far bot­tom cor­ner of the net.
