Louis Saha and Dar­ren Fletch­er sco­red the goals for Uni­ted, whi­le Ja­mes Mor­ris­on net­ted the lone goal for Boro.

Man­chester Uni­ted, who had over­come Wi­gan Ath­let­ic, Bol­ton Wan­derers, Black­burn Rov­ers, and Shef­field Uni­ted in their last four Pre­miership fix­tures, took the lead ag­ainst Middles­brough in the 19th min­ute as Louis Saha be­at River­side cus­todi­an Ma­rk Schwar­zer from the pen­alty spot af­ter the lat­ter had fouled Cris­ti­ano Ron­aldo in­side the area. Boro equal­ised six min­utes pa­st the hour ma­rk when sub­sti­tute Ja­mes Mor­ris­on smash­ed a vol­ley pa­st Man­chester Uni­ted shot stop­per Ed­win van der Sar and in­to the bot­tom left cor­ner of the net, but the vis­it­ors had the last laugh as Dar­ren Fletch­er head­ed ho­me a cross from Ry­an Gig­gs two min­utes la­ter.
