Manchester United were held to a one-all draw against Third Division Bristol Rovers at Eastville. John Rudge handed The Pirates the lead ten minutes after the break before Willie Morgan hit a late equaliser for United with barely three minutes left.
Watney Cup winners Bristol Rovers had knocked out Brighton and Hove Albion in the previous round of the League Cup, whereas Manchester United had dispatched of Oxford United after a replay. Welsh international Wayne Jones almost gave The Gas an early advantage when the twenty-three-year-old midfield dynamo fired a ferocious right-foot shot which went just wide of the upright. Following the interval, Don Megson´s troops eventually found the net thanks to John Rudge who managed to score from a difficult angle five minutes before the hour mark to provide the hosts with a 1-0 lead in front of a boisterous crowd of over 33,000 spectators at Eastville. The First Division side worked desperately for an equalising goal as the second frame wore on and the visitors were duly rewarded when Willie Morgan hit home after a fine individual display in the 87th minute.
