Wat­ney Cup win­ners Bris­tol Rov­ers had knock­ed out Brighton and Hove Al­bion in the pre­vi­ous ro­und of the Lea­gue Cup, where­as Man­chester Uni­ted had dis­patched of Ox­ford Uni­ted af­ter a re­play. Welsh in­ter­na­tion­al Way­ne Jones al­most gave The Gas an early ad­vant­age when the twenty-three-year-old mid­field dy­namo fired a fe­ro­cious right-foot shot which went just wide of the up­right. Fol­low­ing the in­ter­val, Don Megson´s troops ev­entually fou­nd the net thanks to John Rud­ge who ma­naged to score from a dif­fi­cult angle five min­utes be­fore the hour ma­rk to pro­vide the hosts wi­th a 1-0 lead in front of a bois­ter­ous crowd of over 33,000 spec­tat­ors at East­ville. The Fir­st Di­vi­sion si­de wor­ked des­per­ately for an equal­ising goal as the sec­ond frame wore on and the vis­it­ors were duly re­war­ded when Wil­lie Mor­gan hit ho­me af­ter a fine in­di­vidu­al dis­play in the 87th min­ute.
