Chel­sea play­er John Terry cap­tained Eng­land to an im­port­ant away vic­tory as they de­feated Bul­garia by 3-0. The Three Li­ons made the score sheet af­ter a quart­er of an hour as As­ton Vil­la mid­field en­tre­pren­eur Gar­eth Bar­ry fou­nd for­ward think­ing Bol­ton Wan­derers de­fender Ga­ry Ca­hill who cooly ma­naged to put the ball pa­st the on­rush­ing Nikolay Mi­haylov in the Bul­garia goal and in­to the back of the net. Way­ne Roo­ney then head­ed ho­me a fine flag-kick from Liver­pool flanker Stew­art Down­ing in the 21st min­ute of the fix­ture be­fore the Eng­land marks­man ev­entually con­ver­ted a good cross from Man­chester Uni­ted team­mate Ash­ley Young to make the score read 3-0 shortly be­fore the sound of the ha­lf-time whistle. Fol­low­ing the en­counter ag­ainst Lothar Matthaus´s Bul­garia, Fa­bio Capello said that he was de­lighted wi­th England’s per­form­ance, but he still out­lined sev­er­al ways in which his play­ers could im­prove. The Itali­an nev­er­the­less de­clared him­self happy and sat­is­fied wi­th an away tri­umph that left his te­am three points clear at the top of Euro­pean Cham­pi­on­ship Qual­i­fy­ing Group H.
