And even tho­ugh Crewe star­ted on the front foot, it was Uni­ted who took the lead as Ole Gun­nar Sol­skjaer fou­nd the tar­get wi­th a hard and well pla­ced shot from in­side the pen­alty box on twenty-six min­utes. Fol­low­ing the re­start of play, how­ever, Lu­ke Var­ney equal­ised for Al­ex­an­dra when the twenty-four-year-old for­ward blas­ted a right-foot strike pa­st Man­chester Uni­ted and Po­land in­ter­na­tion­al goal­keeper To­masz Kusz­czak and in­to the bot­tom left cor­ner of the net in the sev­enty-third min­ute of the mid­week mat­ch, but Da­vid Gray re­place­ment Kier­an Lee ul­ti­mately sco­red the win­ning goal for the vis­it­ors as the young mid­field pro­spect ham­mered ho­me from the edge of the eight­een-yard area wi­th just one min­ute left of ex­tra-time. Hail­ing from near­by Sta­lybridge, Lee on­ly ma­naged to make a total of three fir­st te­am ap­pear­ances for loc­al club Man­chester Uni­ted dur­ing his four-year stay at Old Traf­ford. Af­ter a short loan pe­riod at Cham­pi­on­ship out­fit Queens Park Ran­gers dur­ing the 2007-08 sea­son, the cent­ral mid­fielder sig­ned a per­man­ent con­tract wi­th Lea­gue One si­de Old­ham Ath­let­ic where he ac­cu­mu­lated well over 100 fir­st class out­ings for The Lat­ics be­fore he de­cided to make a move to re­cently pro­moted Cham­pi­on­ship club Shef­field Wed­nesday at the end of the 2011-12 cam­paign.
