Switzerland 0 England 2
Switzerland 0 England 2, St. Jakob Park, UEFA European Championship Qualifier, September 8, 2014. The Three Lions managed to beat Switzerland at St. Jakob Park in Basel in their first match of the 2016 European Championship Qualifiers. England eventually ran out 2–0 winners over The Rossocrociati thanks to two second half goals by Danny Welbeck.
Wayne Rooney had a good game as the Manchester United player skippered England to a 2-0 away win over Switzerland. The Three Lions came close to scoring on a number of occasions in the first half, but the white shirts were denied by Borussia Monchengladbach and Switzerland goalkeeper Yann Sommer, who managed to pull off a string of excellent saves to the frustration of the visiting side. England finally broke the deadlock when Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling sent a dangerous low ball into the goalmouth where it was met by Danny Welbeck who hammmered home 13 minutes into the second frame. And the same player found the back of the net again as he received a superb pass from Anfield striker Rickie Lambert and then took the ball into the area and placed his shot past Sommer and into the corner of the net to make it 2-0 to the visitors.
