The Three Li­ons ma­naged to be­at Switzer­land at St. Jakob Park in Basel in their fir­st mat­ch of the 2016 Euro­pean Cham­pi­on­ship Qual­i­fi­ers. Eng­land ev­entually ran out 2–0 win­ners over The Ros­so­cro­ci­ati thanks to two sec­ond ha­lf goals by Dan­ny Welbeck.

Way­ne Roo­ney had a good ga­me as the Man­chester Uni­ted play­er skippered Eng­land to a 2-0 away win over Switzer­land. The Three Li­ons came clo­se to scor­ing on a num­ber of oc­ca­sions in the fir­st ha­lf, but the white shirts were denied by Bor­us­sia Monchenglad­bach and Switzer­land goal­keeper Yann Som­mer, who ma­naged to pull off a string of ex­cel­lent saves to the frus­tra­tion of the vis­it­ing si­de. Eng­land fi­nally broke the dead­lock when Liver­pool wing­er Ra­heem Ster­ling sent a dan­ger­ous low ball in­to the goal­mouth where it was met by Dan­ny Wel­beck who hammmered ho­me 13 min­utes in­to the sec­ond frame. And the same play­er fou­nd the back of the net ag­ain as he re­ceived a su­perb pass from An­field stri­ker Rick­ie Lam­bert and then took the ball in­to the area and pla­ced his shot pa­st Som­mer and in­to the cor­ner of the net to make it 2-0 to the vis­it­ors.
