Manchester United had succumbed to a narrow 2-1 defeat against Derby County in their last meeting at Baseball Ground, with former Arsenal forward Charlie George scoring a brace for the hosts either side of the break and Republic of Ireland midfielder Gerry Daly hitting a second-half goal for The Reds. United came into this fixture fresh from a reassuring 2-0 win over Coventry City at Highfield Road, while Dave Mackay´s men had been held to a disappointing goalless draw by Jack Charlton´s Middlesbrough at Baseball Ground.
