Leeds United 1 Manchester United 2, Elland Road, English Football League First Division, October 11, 1975. Newly promoted Manchester United edged out old rivals Leeds United 2-1 in front of a crowd of over 40,000 people at Elland Road. Northern Ireland midfielder Sammy McIlroy scored either side of the break before Allan Clarke hit a late consolation goal for Leeds with five minutes left of the tie.

In their previous First Division game, Manchester United had been held to a goalless draw by Leicester City at Old Trafford, while Leeds United had defeated Queens Park Rangers by 2-1 at Elland Road courtesy of goals from England attacker Allan Clarke and Scotland international Peter Lorimer. On the last occasion that the two sides had met in the First Division at Elland Road, Leeds United and Manchester United had played out a hard fought goalless draw on the 22nd of September 1973. In this match, The Reds went in front when a rather dismal clearance from Welsh midfielder Terry Yorath fell to Sammy McIlroy who powered the ball past Leeds custodian David Stewart and into the net on the half hour mark. Shortly afterwards, Manchester United came close to a second goal as speedy flank forward Steve Coppell executed a low dangerous shot, but his effort was well saved by Stewart. Leeds pushed hard for an equaliser before the break, but The Whites failed to capitalise on their opportunities. Ten minutes into the second half of the fixture, however, Tommy Docherty´s team doubled their lead thanks to McIlroy who blasted a long distance rocket that found its way into the net via the hand of David Stewart. The West Yorkshire players were wasteful in front of goal as the scoreboard clock ticked its way down, but they finally found the net when Clarke scored from close range following 85 minutes of fierce action. But even though Manchester United came under severe pressure during the closing stages of the encounter, the visitors kept Jimmy Armfield´s Leeds troops at bay for the remainder of the contest.
