The Three Li­ons were held to an un­ex­pec­ted one-all draw by the Re­pub­lic of Ire­land at Wemb­ley. Man­chester Uni­ted ace Stu­art Pear­son gave the ho­me si­de a well-de­served lead one min­ute ahead of the break, on­ly for his Old Traf­ford team­mate Ger­ry Da­ly to level the score for The Boys in Green from the spot twelve min­utes in­to the sec­ond period. 

The Re­pub­lic of Ire­land came clo­se early on when Ste­ve Heigh­way un­leashed a shot that went just a few in­ches wide of the left-hand up­right. The Three Li­ons wasted sev­er­al chances as the fir­st ha­lf wore on but the hosts ul­ti­mately got their act to­geth­er in the 44th min­ute when Stu­art Pear­son put a low cross from Kev­in Kee­gan pa­st Re­pub­lic of Ire­land goal­keeper Mick Kearns and in­to the net. The Ir­ish re­turned strong­er af­ter the in­ter­val and had their equal­iser three min­utes min­utes be­fore the hour ma­rk as Ger­ry Da­ly be­at Eng­land shot stop­per Ray Clem­ence from the spot af­ter Heigh­way had be­en bro­ught down by Ray Wil­kins in­side the pen­alty area.
