Eng­land 2 Italy 0, Wemb­ley Sta­dium, FIFA Wor­ld Cup Quali­fier, Nov­ember 16, 1977. The Three Li­ons be­at Italy 2-0 thro­ugh goals from Kev­in Kee­gan and Tre­vor Brook­ing. Man­chester Uni­ted wing­er Ste­ve Cop­pell made an ex­cel­lent de­but for Eng­land, but un­for­tu­nately the win was not big enough to take Ron Greenwood’s si­de to the 1978 Wor­ld Cup Finals.

Eng­land for­ced them­selves in­to the lead fol­low­ing el­ev­en min­utes of ac­tion when a mag­ni­fi­cent cross from Tre­vor Brook­ing fou­nd Kev­in Kee­gan who bril­liantly head­ed the ball bey­ond the reach of Itali­an goal­keeper Dino Zoff and in­to the net. The Three Li­ons pressed hard for a sec­ond goal as the mat­ch pro­gressed and fi­nally ad­ded to their tally wi­th ten min­utes re­maining as Kee­gan sent a clev­er pass in­to the pen­alty area where Brook­ing cooly pla­ced the ball pa­st Zoff and in­to the bot­tom right-hand cor­ner of the net to hand the ho­me te­am a 2-0 vic­tory ag­ainst The Blues at Wemb­ley Sta­dium.
