Montenegro 2 England 2
In the tenth minute of the qualifying match, Arsenal midfielder Theo Walcott found Manchester United´s Ashley Young who headed home to give England the lead before a dangerous low cross ball from the Old Trafford the winger was converted by Aston Villa striker Darren Bent twenty minutes later. Backed by a boisterous and thunderous home crowd, Montenegro pulled a goal back on half-time as Elsad Zverotic sent a deflected shot past England custodian Joe Hart and into the back of the net. After the resumption, England manager Fabio Capello eventually decided to replace Young and Bent with Liverpool´s Stewart Downing and Frank Lampard of Chelsea respectively. There was drama, however, when England frontman Wayne Rooney was handed his marching orders by German referree Wolfgang Stark for kicking out at Montenegro central defender Miodrag Dzudovic seventeen minutes from normal time. In mitigation, though, the whole damned atmosphere at The City Stadium in the Montenegrin capital of Podgorica was hardly conducive towards an enjoyable and incident-free encounter. With Capello´s England team reduced to ten men, The Brave Falcons were able to apply at lot more pressure and the frantic home players finally managed to level the score when an accurate cross ball from 20-year-old Manchester City defender Stefan Savic was met by strong running Rayo Vallecano centre forward Andrija Delibasic who headed the ball past the England netminder and into the goal to make it 2-2 in the last minute of normal playing time.
