England 1 Sweden 0

Controversial England boss Fabio Capello had made as many as seven changes to the team which had defeated Vicente del Bosque´s Spain 1-0 at Wembley three days earlier, only retaining Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart, Manchester United defender Phil Jones, and Arsenal forward Theo Walcott. The Three Lions eventually broke the defensive deadlock after 24 minutes as Gareth Barry steered a well placed header past Swedish shot stopper Andreas Isaksson and into the back of the net. The visiting team almost equalised with twelve minutes remaining, but Bursaspor and England goaltender Scott Carson managed to claw away a long distance cross-shot from Sunderland´s Sebastian Larsson. Then, well into stoppage time, Sweden winger Christian Wilhelmsson squandered a glorious goal scoring opportunity when the seasoned campaigner powered his volley high over the bar from eight yards out. The 1-0 victory, which was England´s first win over Sweden since beating the Scandinavians 3-1 at Wembley thanks to goals from Martin Peters, Bobby Charlton, and Roger Hunt on the 22nd of May 1968, meant that they had now gone nine matches undefeated in 2011.
