Alan Banks put The Gre­cians in front wi­th barely fif­teen min­utes gone, but goals from John Fitz­patrick and Bri­an Kidd plus an own goal by Johnny New­man saw Uni­ted win 3-1 at St Ja­mes Park. 

Des­pite sit­ting 23rd in the Fourth Di­vi­sion ta­ble, Frank Broome´s men left a good ac­count of them­selves ag­ainst Man­chester Uni­ted. For­mer Liver­pool for­ward Alan Banks gave Ex­eter the up­per hand when he pla­ced a head­er pa­st Uni­ted cus­todi­an Al­ex Step­ney and in­to the back of net in the fif­teenth min­ute of the third ro­und mat­ch, on­ly for John Fitz­patrick to level the score for the vis­it­ing si­de wi­th a clo­se ran­ge fin­ish in the last min­ute of the fir­st ha­lf. The Euro­pean Cham­pi­ons ul­ti­mately took the ad­vant­age as City de­fender Johnny New­man ma­naged to steer a cross from To­ny Dun­ne in­to his own net on the hour ma­rk, and the ga­me was def­in­itely put out of reach for the St Ja­mes Park club when Bri­an Kidd ad­ded a third goal for The Reds in the 61st min­ute of play.
