Tom­my Docherty´s lads entered the Di­vi­sion Two fix­ture wi­th Alec Stock´s Ful­ham on the back of a 2-0 away loss to Nor­wich City in which for­mer Old Traf­ford stri­ker Ted Mac­Dou­gall had sco­red a brace for The Ca­nar­ies. Man­chester United´s start­ing lineup ag­ainst The Cot­tagers in­cluded goal­keeper Al­ex Step­ney; de­fenders Al­ex For­syth, Mar­tin Bu­chan, Jim Hol­ton, and Stew­art Hou­s­ton; mid­field­ers Bri­an Green­hoff, Ger­ry Da­ly, Jim Mc­Cal­liog, and Sam­my Mc­Ilroy; and for­wards Wil­lie Mor­gan and Stu­art Pear­son, whi­le mid­fielder Lou Ma­cari was sit­ting on the sub­stitutes´ bench. New boy Stu­art “Pan­cho” Pear­son han­ded Man­chester Uni­ted the lead when the £200,000 sum­mer sign­ing be­at Ful­ham cus­todi­an Pe­ter Mel­lor af­ter eight­een min­utes and the very same man fou­nd the back of the net ag­ain wi­th four­teen min­utes left be­fore ex-Wycom­be Wan­derers and Luton To­wn for­ward Viv Busby re­cor­ded a late con­sol­a­tion goal for the West Lon­doners. An ar­chetyp­al cent­ral at­tack­er wi­th an ex­cel­lent sense of po­s­i­tion­ing, Pear­son would live up to ex­pect­a­tions at Man­chester Uni­ted, con­trib­ut­ing sev­en­teen goals in thirty-one Sec­ond Di­vi­sion ap­pear­ances for the club dur­ing the pro­mo­tion win­ning cam­paign of 1974-75.
