Fulham 1 Manchester Utd 2
Fulham 1 Manchester United 2, Craven Cottage Stadium, English Football League Second Division, October 5, 1974. After suffering their first defeat of the 1974-75 season against fellow early pacesetters Norwich City at Carrow Road, Manchester United hit back with a well-earned 2-1 triumph against Fulham at Craven Cottage where Stuart “Pancho” Pearson netted both of the goals for the visitors.
Tommy Docherty´s lads entered the Division Two fixture with Alec Stock´s Fulham on the back of a 2-0 away loss to Norwich City in which former Old Trafford striker Ted MacDougall had scored a brace for The Canaries. Manchester United´s starting lineup against The Cottagers included goalkeeper Alex Stepney; defenders Alex Forsyth, Martin Buchan, Jim Holton, and Stewart Houston; midfielders Brian Greenhoff, Gerry Daly, Jim McCalliog, and Sammy McIlroy; and forwards Willie Morgan and Stuart Pearson, while midfielder Lou Macari was sitting on the substitutes´ bench. New boy Stuart “Pancho” Pearson handed Manchester United the lead when the £200,000 summer signing beat Fulham custodian Peter Mellor after eighteen minutes and the very same man found the back of the net again with fourteen minutes left before ex-Wycombe Wanderers and Luton Town forward Viv Busby recorded a late consolation goal for the West Londoners. An archetypal central attacker with an excellent sense of positioning, Pearson would live up to expectations at Manchester United, contributing seventeen goals in thirty-one Second Division appearances for the club during the promotion winning campaign of 1974-75. Fulham Team: Peter Mellor, John Fraser, Leslie Strong, John Lacy, Bobby Moore, Alan Mullery, Jimmy Conway, Alan Slough, Viv Busby, Barry Lloyd, Les Barrett. Substitutes: None. Manchester United Team: Alex Stepney, Alex Forsyth, Stewart Houston, Jim Holton, Martin Buchan, Brian Greenhoff, Jim McCalliog, Gerry Daly, Stuart Pearson, Sammy McIlroy, Willie Morgan.
