Goals from Mi­kael Sil­vestre and Ry­an Gig­gs kept Man­chester Uni­ted at the top of the Pre­mier Lea­gue ta­ble as Sir Al­ex Ferguson´s title chasers took a fully de­served two-one vic­tory ag­ainst new­ly pro­moted Wat­ford in their sec­ond away ga­me of the 2006-07 season.

Pre­miership lead­ers Man­chester Uni­ted went ahead in the mat­ch as French sharp­shoot­er Louis Saha bril­liantly set up fel­low coun­try­man Mi­kael Sil­vestre who­se power­ful shot from the left-si­de of the pen­alty area went pa­st for­mer Eng­land U21 shot stop­per Rich­ard Lee and in­to the far bot­tom cor­ner of the net in the twelfth min­ute of play. Wat­ford re­fused to lie down, tho­ugh, and The Hor­nets came back to level the score four min­utes pa­st the ha­lf-hour ma­rk when Ash­ley Young de­livered a low dan­ger­ous cross to the feet of ex-Nor­wich City ace Dami­en Fran­cis who net­ted from just a few yards out. The Old Traf­ford men tried to re­gain their lead, but Wat­ford held firm for the re­mainder of the fir­st pe­riod and the hosts went in­to the break wi­th re­newed op­tim­ism. Af­ter some trade­mark hair-dry­er treat­ment from Sir Al­ex Fer­guson dur­ing the in­ter­val, how­ever, Man­chester Uni­ted came out as a re­formed te­am in the sec­ond pe­riod and the vis­it­ors had their win­ner in the fifty-sec­ond min­ute of the tie as the quick think­ing Ry­an Gig­gs took ad­vant­age of a mis­take by Wat­ford mid­fielder Mat­thew Spring be­fore round­ing Lee and put­ting the ball in­to the empty net.
