Manchester Utd 3 Rapid 0
Manchester United 3 Rapid Vienna 0, Old Trafford, UEFA European Cup Quarter-Final First Leg, February 26, 1969. Manchester United and Northern Ireland forward George Best showed glimpses of his greatness, scoring two goals either side of half-time break against Rapid Vienna in a 3-0 win at Old Trafford. Scotland international Willie Morgan also managed to make the score sheet for the home side with a well-taken goal in the second frame.
Although the important match against Rudolf Vytlacil´s Rapid Vienna took place a mere two days after Manchester United had trashed Second Division club Birmingham City by a 6-2 score at Old Trafford in an FA Cup Fifth Round Replay, Sir Matt Busby´s men still had enough in them to win in style. With only one minute remaining of the first half, George Best handed United a well-deserved lead when he followed up a fierce effort from fellow striker Denis Law to score on the rebound. Following the restart, Manchester United doubled their advantage when summer signing Willie Morgan went on to register the second goal of the evening in the 70th minute of the European Cup fixture, and shortly afterwards England midfielder Nobbby Stiles played a magnificent chipped pass to Best who made the final score read 3-0 in favour of The Reds.
