Manchester United 4 Millwall 0, Old Trafford Stadium, English Football League Second Division, August 24, 1974. Recently relegated Manchester United cruised to victory in their first home encounter of the 1974-75 campaign, defeating Millwall by a comprehensive 4-0 scoreline courtesy of a treble by Republic of Ireland international midfielder Gerry Daly and one goal from Stuart “Panhco” Pearson.

The Second Division encounter between Manchester United and Millwall on the 24th of August 1974 saw the introduction of an anti-riot metal fence at Old Trafford. United´s final home game of the 1973-74 campaign against neighbouring rivals Manchester City had been marred by serious crowd trouble and the FA had instructed the club to install perimeter fencing in order to prevent further pitch invasions. In their opening fixture of the new season, Manchester United had comfortably defeated Orient 2-0 at Brisbane Road in North East London through a goal each from Scottish internationals Willie Morgan and Stewart Houston, whereas the South East Londoners had overcome Nottingham Forest by 3-0 at The Den thanks to a double from winger Gordon Hill and a single by midfielder Mike Kelly. United controlled the match against Millwall from the beginning and The Reds put themselves into an early lead when new signing Stuart Pearson managed to find the target in the third minute of the contest before Gerry Daly added a second goal with six minutes remaining of the first period as the twenty-year-old midfield playmaker placed an unstoppable effort past away shot stopper Bryan King and into the back of the net. The Dubliner then completed his hat-trick by converting two penalty kicks during the last five minutes of the clash to secure a 4-0 win for Manchester United over The Lions in front of a 45,000 crowd at Old Trafford. At the end of the day, Tommy Docherty´s men eventually clinched the Second Division Championship when they managed a 2-2 draw against Notts County at Meadow Lane in their penultimate match of the campaign and finished the season three points ahead of runners-up Aston Villa, and eight above Norwich City in third position.
