Gordon Hill Profile
Gordon Alec Hill, born Sudbury-on-Thames, England, April 1, 1954. Gordon Hill initiated his football career with Millwall where he emerged as a promising outside left under the sound leadership of Benny Fenton. After spending the summer of 1975 appearing for North American Soccer League outfit Chicago Sting, he joined Manchester United for a bargain fee of £70,000 partly into the 1975-76 season.
Gordon Hill, who was sometimes guilty of overdoing the showmanship, was handed his Division One debut for Manchester United by Tommy Docherty in a 2-0 triumph over Ron Saunder´s Aston Villa side at Old Trafford on the 15th of November 1975 and quickly made his presence felt by forming a formidable wing partnership with fellow flank forward Steve Coppell who had arrived from League Division Three team Tranmere Rovers for a transfer fee of £60,000 the previous season. Hill registered his first League goal for Manchester United when he found the back of the net in a 4-1 demolishing of relegation candidates Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on the 13th of the following month and hit the winner in a narrow 1-0 First Division victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford a week later. During the 1975-76 campaign, Manchester United injected loads of positivity into English soccer with an adventurous approach to attacking football which suited his playing style perfectly and he registered both goals in the 2-0 FA Cup Semi Final victory against Derby County at Hillsborough on the 3rd of April 1976 as he helped The Reds reach the final, only to succumb to a narrow 1-0 defeat at the hands of Second Division Southampton. He returned to Wembley Stadium the following year, however, to pick up an FA Cup winner’s medal when Docherty´s United edged out North West enemies Liverpool by 2-1 thanks to second-half goals by striking partners Stuart Pearson and Jimmy Greenhoff.
After amassing 101 Football League appearances for Manchester United, Gordon Hill would leave the club in the spring of 1978 when the flankman was sold to fellow First Division side Derby County, who were by then managed by Docherty, for a transfer fee of £250,000, linking with Baseball Ground players such as Gerry Daly, Archie Gemmill, Charlie George, Bruce Rioch, and Gerry Ryan. Following 24 Football League games for The Rams, he teamed up with The Doc for a third time when he signed with Queens Park Rangers in 1980, and made 14 First Division outings for the side before he decided to leave for North America where he starred for several teams. Being a happy wanderer, he also enjoyed spells at FC Twente, HJK Helsinki, Stafford Rangers, and Northwich Victoria, and later became head coach of Nova Scotia Clippers, Chester City, and Hyde United. An England player, Hill was given his international debut for The Three Lions by former Leeds United boss Don Revie in a 3-2 win over Italy at Yankee Stadium in New York in the USA Bicentennial Cup Tournament on the 28th of May 1976 and went on to collect a total of six senior caps for the country of his birth. Gordon Hill Playing Career: Millwall, Chicago Sting, Manchester United, Derby County, Queens Park Rangers, Montreal Manic, Chicago Sting, Inter Montreal, FC Twente, HJK Helsinki, Stafford Rangers, Northwich Victoria, Nova Scotia Clippers. Playing Honours: English FA Cup 1977, English FA Charity Shield 1977.
