Man­chester Uni­ted de­feated Ips­wich To­wn 2-0 at Port­man Road thanks to goals from wing­er Ar­thur Gra­ham and stri­ker Garth Crooks in the 11th and 55th min­utes of the clash respectively. 

Man­chester Uni­ted achieved their fir­st away win over Ips­wich To­wn for al­most six years as The Reds emer­ged 2-0 win­ners ag­ainst the East Anglia te­am in front of a 20,000 crowd at Port­man Road. For­mer Ab­er­deen and Leeds Uni­ted fa­vour­ite Ar­thur Gra­ham set Man­chester Uni­ted on their way to vic­tory when the thirty-one-year-old wing­er be­at Ips­wich To­wn shot stop­per Paul Cooper af­ter on­ly el­ev­en min­utes of ac­tion. Fol­low­ing the re­start of play, Tot­ten­ham Hot­spur loanee Garth Crooks ev­entually sco­red the sec­ond goal of the af­ter­noon ten min­utes in­to the sec­ond ha­lf of the con­test to hand Ron Atkinson´s men a well-de­served 2-0 tri­umph over The Blues. The res­ult meant that Man­chester Uni­ted were now just one point adrift of Fir­st Di­vi­sion lead­ers Liver­pool, whi­le Bob­by Ferguson´s Ips­wich si­de fou­nd them­selves a mere six points above the re­leg­a­tion zone.
