Ipswich Town 4 Manchester United 1, Portman Road, English Football League First Division, February 17, 1973. Manchester United had a dreadful afternoon as they succumbed to a heavy away defeat at the hands of Ipswich Town. The Reds were two goals down at the interval and the visiting side conceded two more in the second frame to ultimately lose the game at Portman Road by a final score of 4-1.

Bobby Robson had taken the managerial reigns at Ipswich Town in January 1969 and the previous Fulham and West Bromwich Albion forward had built a team with a winning mentality second to none. The East Anglia club launched themselves into an early lead through a close range goal from Northern Ireland international Bryan Hamilton within the first two minutes and The Blues had their second when defender Colin Harper headed home a corner-kick on the half-hour mark. Ipswich continued the second half of the tie where they had left off before the break and the hosts stretched their lead further as Manchester United custodian Alex Stepney fumbled a shot from Hamilton into his own net in the 47th minute of the clash. Scottish international Lou Macari managed to reduce the arrears for United on the hour-mark, but a penalty goal from South African born midfielder Colin Viljoen a minute later put the match out of reach for Tommy Docherty´s troops. The encounter against Ipswich was Tony Dunne´s 535th and last appearance for Manchester United before the experienced full back teamed up with Bolton Wanderers at the beginning of the 1973-74 season. The Irishman later had a short spell with Detroit Express for whom he made twelve North American Soccer League appearances during the 1979 campaign.
