John As­ton, born Man­chester, Eng­land, June 28, 1947. John As­ton star­ted out at Man­chester Uni­ted where he sig­ned as an ap­pren­tice wi­th the club on the 12th of June 1963. Wi­th Uni­ted, he help­ed The Reds win the Fir­st Di­vi­sion Cham­pi­on­ship in the 1966-67 cam­paign, as well as the Euro­pean Cup Fi­nal ag­ainst Ben­fica at Wemb­ley the fol­low­ing season.

A ca­reer in pro­fes­sion­al foot­ball seemed pre­or­dained as his fath­er, John As­ton Seni­or, played for Man­chester Uni­ted be­tween 1946 and 1954. A tal­en­ted left wing­er, John As­ton Ju­ni­or was han­ded his Foot­ball Lea­gue de­but for Uni­ted by Matt Busby in a 1-0 Fir­st Di­vi­sion tri­umph ag­ainst Lei­cester City at Old Traf­ford on the 12th of April 1965 and went on to make 28 Foot­ball Lea­gue ap­pear­ances for the club the next sea­son. He ev­entually be­came a reg­u­lar starter and was a vi­tal part of the si­de which over­came Por­tuguese gi­ants Ben­fica by 4-1 in the un­for­get­table Euro­pean Cup Fi­nal at Wemb­ley on the 29th of May 1968. Af­ter play­ing the mat­ch of his life ag­ainst The Eagles, how­ever, a broken leg left As­ton un­able to re­claim his place in the Man­chester Uni­ted fir­st te­am when he fi­nally ma­naged to re­gain his fit­ness. An ac­cur­ate and con­sist­ent cross­er of the ball wi­th a thun­der­ous shot too, he amassed 25 goals in 155 Fir­st Di­vi­sion ap­pear­ances for Uni­ted be­fore he left Old Traf­ford for am­bi­tious Sec­ond Di­vi­sion out­fit Luton To­wn at the be­gin­ning of the 1972-73 term. He thrived un­der Luton man­ager Harry Haslam and played a lead­ing role as The Hat­ters clin­ched pro­mo­tion to the top-flight in 1973-74, af­ter a four­teen-year ex­ile from the elite. Fol­low­ing a five-year stay at Kenil­worth Road, the ex­hil­ar­at­ing flanker ev­entually teamed up wi­th re­cently pro­moted Lea­gue Di­vi­sion Two club Mans­field To­wn for whom he con­trib­uted four Sec­ond Di­vi­sion hits in 31 ga­mes for The Stags. As­ton la­ter joi­ned for­ces wi­th Lan­cashire te­am Black­burn Rov­ers where he fin­ished off his play­ing days at the end of the 1978-79 cam­paign.
