Leeds United 2 Manchester United 1, Elland Road, English Premier Leauge, September 11, 1994. Manchester United suffered their first defeat of the 1994-95 campaign as they lost 2-1 to Leeds United. David Wetherall and Brian Deane put Leeds into a 2-0 lead before ex-Elland Road ace Eric Cantona scored a late consolation from the spot for the visitors.

Following a 2-0 FA Charity Shield victory over Blackburn Rovers at Wembley, Manchester United had beaten Queens Park Rangers, Tottenham Hotspur, and Wimbledon, and drawn with Nottingham Forest in their four opening fixtures of the 1994-95 Premier League season and were sitting second in the top-flight standings. Leeds United, meanwhile, had defeated Arsenal and Crystal Palace, drawn with West Ham United, and lost against Chelsea and found themselves in eighth position in the Premiership table. The clash between old rivals Leeds and Manchester United at Elland Road lived up to its billing as a tough encounter and Eric Cantona was mercilessly heckled and jeered by the home supporters from the very first whistle. After helping Leeds to the First Division title in 1991-92, Cantona had joined Manchester United on the 26th of November 1992 in a deal that didn’t quite go down well with the Elland Road faithful, but he still put in a good performance despite the hostility from the crowd in what his was his third away game against his former club.

The Yorkshiremen began the better and David Wetherall hit the first goal of the match in the twelfth minute of proceedings when the massive defender fired home from a corner by England international David White. And three minutes into the second half, early substitute Brian Deane scored the second goal for The Peacocks as the local born striker converted a short low cross by nineteen-year-old winger Noel Whelan from close range. Manchester United managed to pull one back through a well executed penalty-kick from none other than Eric Cantona in the 73rd minute of the contest, but the visiting team from the other side of the Pennines failed to find an equalising goal despite a strong finish.
