Leeds 2 Manchester Utd 3
Leeds United 2 Manchester United 3, Elland Road, English Football League Cup Third Round, October 28, 2003. Manchester United had more problems than expected against Leeds United at Elland Road, but Sir Alex Ferguson´s side eventually emerged 3-2 winners thanks to goals from David Bellion and Diego Forlan plus one goal by Eric Djemba-Djemba.
Manchester United had defeated Leeds United 1-0 in a Premier League fixture at Elland Road courtesy of a late second half goal from Roy Keane in the previous meeting between the two teams ten days earlier and were slight favourites to beat the Yorkshiremen. The Peacocks nevertheless took the advantage as Brazilian international defender Roque Junior headed home a corner-kick from ex-Derby County midfielder Seth Johnson four minutes following the half-time break, but as the second half went on Manchester United gradually took control of proceedings and the red shirts ultimately equalised through twenty-year-old forward David Bellion who raced onto a through pass from Eric Djemba-Djemba and beat Three Lions shot stopper Paul Robinson with a cool finish twelve minutes from normal time. Then, in extra time, Diego Forlan put Manchester United ahead for the first time in the match when he converted a low cross from Darren Fletcher on 108 minutes. But Roque Junior found the back of the net again six minutes later, only for Djemba-Djemba to score the winner for the visitors when he got on the end of a well delivered flag-kick from Quinton Fortune and hammered the ball past Robinson and into the top left-hand corner of the net after 117 minutes of play.
