Leeds 2 Manchester Utd 2
Leeds United 2 Manchester United 2, Elland Road, English Football League First Division, September 6, 1969. Manchester United earned themselves a point in a 2-2 draw against bitter enemies Leeds United, who equalised late in the second period through captain and midfielder Billy Bremner.
In their previous home matches of the 1969-70 campaign, Leeds United had overcome Tottenham Hotspur and drawn to Arsenal and Newcastle United. Manchester United, meanwhile, had drawn against Crystal Palace and Wolverhampton Wanderers and been defeated by Everton away. Reigning First Division Champions Leeds United went into the lead in the first half when David Sadler headed a high ball from former Manchester United player Johnny Giles over goalkeeper Alex Stepney and into his own net. The Old Trafford side pushed hard for an equalising goal, but failed to capitalise on their opportunities before the break. Following the restart, George Best finally managed to equalise for the visitors from close range after a scramble in the goal mouth and the Ulsterman scored again with ten minutes remaining of the game, only for Billy Bremner to net for The Whites with a spectacular overhead-kick shortly afterwards to make the final scoreline 2-2. Despite a mediocre start to the new season, The Manchester Reds were the better team against Don Revie´s Leeds and had deserved to win. Leeds United Team: Gary Sprake, Paul Reaney, Terry Cooper, Jack Charlton, Norman Hunter, Billy Bremner, Paul Madeley, Peter Lorimer, Mick Jones, Johnny Giles, Eddie Gray. Substitute: Michael O’Grady.
