Man­chester Uni­ted earned them­selves a point in a 2-2 draw ag­ainst bit­ter en­emies Leeds Uni­ted, who equal­ised late in the sec­ond pe­riod thro­ugh cap­tain and mid­fielder Billy Bremner.

In their pre­vi­ous ho­me mat­ches of the 1969-70 cam­paign, Leeds Uni­ted had over­come Tot­ten­ham Hot­spur and drawn to Ar­senal and New­castle Uni­ted. Man­chester Uni­ted, mean­while, had drawn ag­ainst Crys­tal Pal­ace and Wolver­hampton Wan­derers and be­en de­feated by Ever­ton away. Reign­ing Fir­st Di­vi­sion Cham­pi­ons Leeds Uni­ted went in­to the lead in the fir­st ha­lf when Da­vid Sad­ler head­ed a high ball from for­mer Man­chester Uni­ted play­er Johnny Giles over goal­keeper Al­ex Step­ney and in­to his own net. The Old Traf­ford si­de push­ed hard for an equal­ising goal, but failed to cap­it­al­ise on their op­por­tun­it­ies be­fore the break. Fol­low­ing the re­start, Ge­orge Best fi­nally ma­naged to equal­ise for the vis­it­ors from clo­se ran­ge af­ter a scramble in the goal mouth and the Ul­ster­man sco­red ag­ain wi­th ten min­utes re­maining of the ga­me, on­ly for Billy Brem­ner to net for The Whi­tes wi­th a spec­tac­u­lar over­head-kick shortly af­ter­wards to make the fi­nal sco­reline 2-2. Des­pite a me­diocre start to the new sea­son, The Man­chester Reds were the bet­ter te­am ag­ainst Don Revie´s Leeds and had de­served to win.
