Lei­cester City and Man­chester Uni­ted se­cured a point each as they shared the spoils in an en­ter­tain­ing 1-1 draw. The East Mid­landers took the lead thro­ugh a fir­st ha­lf goal by Chris Gar­land, on­ly for Ger­ry Da­ly to equal­ise for Uni­ted from the pen­alty spot fol­low­ing the re­sump­tion of play.

Man­chester Uni­ted came in­to this fix­ture on the back of a high-scor­ing 3-3 draw ag­ainst Fir­st Di­vi­sion new­comers Sun­der­land at Old Traf­ford, whi­le Lei­cester City had suc­cumbed to a heavy 5-1 de­feat at the hands of reign­ing Foot­ball Lea­gue Cham­pi­ons Liver­pool at An­field in their pre­vi­ous en­counter. Lei­cester near­ly took the lead early on when a low cross by Eng­land de­fender Ste­ve Whit­worth fou­nd ex-Chel­sea for­ward Chris Gar­land who­se ef­fort went just in­ches wide of the left-hand up­right. Gar­land ev­entually got his goal wi­th eight min­utes of the fir­st ha­lf gone as he head­ed a high cross from Keith Weller, also a for­mer Stam­ford Bridge fa­vour­ite, pa­st Man­chester Uni­ted cus­todi­an Al­ex Step­ney and in­to the bot­tom right-hand si­de of the net to give The Fil­berts a 1-0 ad­vant­age. Tom­my Docherty´s boys gradu­ally took con­trol of pos­ses­sion, but Lei­cester were dan­ger­ous on the counter at­tacks. In the sec­ond ha­lf, Frank Wor­thing­ton came clo­se to scor­ing for the ho­me te­am shortly af­ter the in­ter­val, on­ly to see his at­tempt hit the post. As the clock wound down at Fil­bert Street, Man­chester Uni­ted fi­nally had their equal­iser when Ger­ry Da­ly con­ver­ted from the pen­alty spot af­ter Ste­ve Cop­pell had be­en bro­ught down by Den­nis Rofe in­side the area wi­th a few min­utes re­maining of nor­mal time. Lei­cester tried des­per­ately to re­gain their lead, but time was run­ning out and the ga­me ended one-all.
