Leicester 1 Manchester U 1
Leicester City 1 Manchester United 1, Filbert Street, English Football League First Division, November 20, 1976. Leicester City and Manchester United secured a point each as they shared the spoils in an entertaining 1-1 draw. The East Midlanders took the lead through a first half goal by Chris Garland, only for Gerry Daly to equalise for United from the penalty spot following the resumption of play.
Manchester United came into this fixture on the back of a high-scoring 3-3 draw against First Division newcomers Sunderland at Old Trafford, while Leicester City had succumbed to a heavy 5-1 defeat at the hands of reigning Football League Champions Liverpool at Anfield in their previous encounter. Leicester nearly took the lead early on when a low cross by England defender Steve Whitworth found ex-Chelsea forward Chris Garland whose effort went just inches wide of the left-hand upright. Garland eventually got his goal with eight minutes of the first half gone as he headed a high cross from Keith Weller, also a former Stamford Bridge favourite, past Manchester United custodian Alex Stepney and into the bottom right-hand side of the net to give The Filberts a 1-0 advantage. Tommy Docherty´s boys gradually took control of possession, but Leicester were dangerous on the counter attacks. In the second half, Frank Worthington came close to scoring for the home team shortly after the interval, only to see his attempt hit the post. As the clock wound down at Filbert Street, Manchester United finally had their equaliser when Gerry Daly converted from the penalty spot after Steve Coppell had been brought down by Dennis Rofe inside the area with a few minutes remaining of normal time. Leicester tried desperately to regain their lead, but time was running out and the game ended one-all.
