Liam O´Brien joi­ned Man­chester Uni­ted from Lea­gue of Ire­land si­de Sham­rock Rov­ers for an ini­tial trans­fer fee of ar­ound £50,000 in Oct­ober 1986 and was Ron Atkin­son’s last sign­ing as man­ager at Old Traf­ford. The Ir­ish­man was han­ded his Di­vi­sion One de­but for The Reds in a 2-0 win ag­ainst Lei­cester City at Old Traf­ford on the 20th of Dec­ember 1986, and sco­red his fir­st goal for the club when he re­gistered the win­ner in a 1-0 Fir­st Di­vi­sion vic­tory at ho­me to Cov­entry City on the 6th of Feb­ruary 1988. Whi­le at Old Traf­ford, the mid­field mo­tor clocked up a total of 36 fir­st class ap­pear­ances for Uni­ted un­der Al­ex Fer­guson, con­trib­ut­ing two goals dur­ing the pro­cess. Come Nov­ember 1988, O´Brien was sold to New­castle Uni­ted where he ap­peared in 185 fir­st te­am ga­mes un­til he mo­ved to Foot­ball Lea­gue Fir­st Di­vi­sion Tran­mere Rov­ers at the end of the 1993-94 cam­paign. Dur­ing the lat­ter part of his play­ing days, he had short spells wi­th Ir­ish Lea­gue te­ams Cork City and Bo­hemi­ans be­fore re­tir­ing in 2002.
