Liam O´Brien joined Manchester United from League of Ireland side Shamrock Rovers for an initial transfer fee of around £50,000 in October 1986 and was Ron Atkinson’s last signing as manager at Old Trafford. The Irishman was handed his Division One debut for The Reds in a 2-0 win against Leicester City at Old Trafford on the 20th of December 1986, and scored his first goal for the club when he registered the winner in a 1-0 First Division victory at home to Coventry City on the 6th of February 1988. While at Old Trafford, the midfield motor clocked up a total of 36 first class appearances for United under Alex Ferguson, contributing two goals during the process. Come November 1988, O´Brien was sold to Newcastle United where he appeared in 185 first team games until he moved to Football League First Division Tranmere Rovers at the end of the 1993-94 campaign. During the latter part of his playing days, he had short spells with Irish League teams Cork City and Bohemians before retiring in 2002.
