De­fend­ing Di­vi­sion One Cham­pi­ons Man­chester City and reign­ing Euro­pean Cham­pi­ons Man­chester Uni­ted played out a fairly en­ter­tain­ing 0-0 draw be­fore a 63,000 crowd at Maine Road. 

Three Li­ons mid­fielder Nob­by Sti­les had a great ga­me for Man­chester Uni­ted ag­ainst Man­chester City at Maine Road, work­ing his socks off all af­ter­noon. North­ern Ire­land in­ter­na­tion­al Ge­orge Best also put in a su­perb ef­fort and was un­lucky not to score early on. Al­though Man­chester Uni­ted were the bet­ter te­am through­out the ninety min­utes, The Reds had to settle for a goal­less draw ag­ainst Man­chester City. Un­for­tu­nately, John As­ton broke his leg in this mat­ch and the Man­chester born wing­er would miss most of the 1968-69 cam­paign. Next up for Man­chester Uni­ted was a fix­ture ag­ainst Fir­st Di­vi­sion new­comers Cov­entry City at Old Traf­ford four days la­ter.
