Af­ter suf­fer­ing a sur­prise 1-0 de­feat ag­ainst Sto­ke City at Vic­tor­ia Gro­und three days earli­er, Man­chester Uni­ted be­at Man­chester City 2-1 at Maine Road thro­ugh a brace by Frank Stapleton.

Man­chester Uni­ted came from a goal down to edge out Man­chester City by two goals to one in an en­ter­tain­ing der­by mat­ch at Maine Road. The Man­chester Reds had a few chances early on, but it was The Sky Blues who took the ad­vant­age when a cor­ner-kick taken by Asa Hart­ford ended wi­th for­mer Nor­wich City front­man Kev­in Reeves head­ing the ball pa­st away goal­keeper Ga­ry Bai­ley and in­to the back of the net two min­utes pa­st the ha­lf-hour ma­rk. Man­chester Uni­ted began the sec­ond ha­lf on the front foot and lev­elled the score thro­ugh Re­pub­lic of Ire­land stri­ker Frank Stapleton who be­at Man­chester City cus­todi­an Joe Cor­rigan wi­th a head­er from an ex­cel­lent cross by Ste­ve Cop­pell in the 51st min­ute. The Old Traf­ford si­de kept up the at­tack­ing pres­sure and they were re­war­ded when Stapleton con­ver­ted a cor­ner wi­th four­teen min­utes re­maining of nor­mal time. Man­chester City and Eng­land U21 centre-back Tom­my Caton had a great op­por­tun­ity in the clos­ing sta­ges, but his fe­ro­cious ef­fort hit the wood­work and the en­counter ended wi­th a 2-1 tri­umph for the vis­it­ors.
