Ole Solskjaer´s Man­chester Uni­ted gain­ed an im­port­ant and con­fid­ence-boost­ing 2-1 tri­umph ag­ainst de­fend­ing Pre­mier Lea­gue Cham­pi­ons Man­chester City in front of a crowd of 54,000 spec­tat­ors at East­lands thro­ugh fir­st ha­lf goals by in­ter­na­tion­al stri­kers Mar­cus Rash­ford and An­thony Martial. 

Paul Po­gba re­mained side­lined for Man­chester Uni­ted, but fel­low coun­try­man An­thony Mar­tial was back from in­jury. Mar­cus Rash­ford han­ded Man­chester Uni­ted the lead in the twenty-third min­ute of the en­counter when the at­tack­er con­ver­ted from the pen­alty spot af­ter he had be­en knock­ed over in the area by Man­chester City and Por­tugal de­fender Bern­ardo Silva. And a mere six min­utes la­ter Mar­tial ad­ded a sec­ond goal for The Man­chester Reds as he ham­mered a well-pla­ced low shot from in­side the area in­to the bot­tom right-hand cor­ner of the net to give the vis­it­ing te­am a two-nil ad­vant­age at the in­ter­val. Nic­olas Ot­a­mendi, who had re­placed John Stones a min­ute be­fore the hour ma­rk, ma­naged to re­duce the ar­rears for The Sky Blues wi­th some five min­utes left of the der­by ga­me, but the vis­it­ors held firm to grab all three points. Af­ter de­feat­ing Man­chester City by a 2-1 score at Eti­had Sta­dium, Man­chester Uni­ted had now won on three of their last five vis­its to the East­lands in the Pre­miership.
