Manchester City 3 Manchester United 0, Maine Road, English Football League First Division, November 18, 1972. After beating Liverpool 2-0 at Old Trafford in their previous match, Manchester United put in a lackadaisical performance the following week as they lost 3-0 to The Citizens at Maine Road.

Manchester City raced into an early advantage after only seven minutes when Alex Stepney failed to hold a corner from Mike Summberbee and Colin Bell was on hand to put the ball into the net, but the experienced goalkeeper redeemed himself shortly afterwards when he made a magnificent save from a Francis Lee overhead-kick. The Manchester City players claimed the ball was over the line, but the referee just waved the play on. Manchester City kept up their attacking efforts after the interval and the hosts came close to scoring on several occasions as the second half wore on. With the match approaching the closing stages, Manchester United had a great chance to equalise when former AFC Bournemouth striker Ted Macdougall met a good cross from Ian Storey-Moore, but his header went over the bar, and instead it was the home side who doubled their lead through an own goal from Martin Buchan in the 82nd minute. But the game was not quite finished yet and Manchester City scored a third goal three minutes later as Bell took advantage of another mistake by the Manchester United defence to force the ball home from only a few yards out with five minutes remaining on the clock.
