Watched by a bois­ter­ous crowd of more than 63,000 spec­tat­ors, Fal­low­field born in­side for­ward Neil Young put Joe Mercer´s Man­chester City in­to a 1-0 lead wi­th a mis­cued cross sev­en min­utes ahead of the ha­lf-time break. Fol­low­ing the re­sump­tion of play, for­mer Bury mid­fielder Co­lin Bell doubled the lead for the ho­me te­am ten min­utes in­to the sec­ond ha­lf be­fore ex­per­i­enced Man­chester Uni­ted de­fender Da­vid Sad­ler had the mis­for­tune of put­ting the ball in­to the back of his own net on­ly a min­ute la­ter in the mat­ch. The ir­re­press­ible Bell then stret­ched the ad­vant­age fur­ther for Man­chester City when the 23-year-old play­maker com­pleted his brace wi­th two min­utes re­maining of the der­by en­counter, ma­king the fi­nal sco­reline 4-0.
