Manchester United had a great scoring opportunity early on in the clash, only for Scottish striker Brian McClair to be denied by away goalkeeper Steve Sutton. The winning goal of the contest arrived in the 42nd minute of action when a clearance from Manchester United and Republic of Ireland defender Paul McGrath went straight to Nottingham Forest winger Franz Carr whose low cross was tucked home by Garry Parker. United worked hard for an equaliser following the resumption of play, but the home team were kept at bay by the solid Forest defence.
