Man United 1 Man City 3
Manchester United 1 Manchester City 3, Old Trafford, English Football League First Division, March 27, 1968. Manchester United´s roller coaster form continued with a home defeat against rivals Manchester City. Bobby Charlton and his men took an early lead, but eventually lost 3-1 to The Citizens.
Manchester United had won four, drawn one, and lost five of their previous ten fixtures, while Manchester City had won five, drawn three, and lost two. Before a 62,000 strong crowd at Old Trafford, The Manchester Reds found themselves ahead in the match within the first minute when George Best beat Manchester City defender Tony Book for pace and rounded former Stockport County goalkeeper Ken Mulhearn before putting the ball into the back of the empty net. Stung by the early goal, the Manchester City players pushed hard forward and the visiting side managed to level the score in the 18th minute of the pulsating encounter thanks to a fine individual goal from ex-Bury midfielder Colin Bell. With the second frame well under way, Malcolm Allison´s boys had the derby game turned around in the 59th minute of action when stopper George Heslop, a £25,000 acquisition from Everton, headed home an expertly delivered free-kick by winger Tony Coleman. Manchester City kept on pressing and increased their lead with eight minutes remaining through a converted penalty from Francis Lee, formerly with Bolton Wanderers, after Bell had been unnecessarily fouled inside the area by Francis Burns.
