Manchester United 1-0 Sheffield United 0, Old Trafford, English FA Cup Third Round, January 9, 2016. Although Manchester United had more problems than expected against Leauge One club Sheffield United, Louis van Gaal´s team ultimately won the Emirates FA Cup Third Round game by 1-0 through a late penalty goal by Wayne Rooney in the 92nd minute.
Manchester United, who played in a 4-2-3-1 formation, dominated from the outset, but the home side had a very few shots on target during the opening forty-five minutes and the first half ended goalless. Manchester United kept up the pressure following the restart and substitute Memphis Depay came close to scoring five minutes past the hour mark, only to watch his twenty-five yard shot go wide of the left upright. But just as the match looked destined to be heading for a draw, Memphis was illegally brought down by Sheffield United midfielder Dean Hammond inside the eighteen-yard box during stoppage time and referee Jonathan Moss awarded Manchester United a penalty which Wayne Rooney converted to give the hosts a 1-0 win.
