Fol­low­ing de­feats ag­ainst Cov­entry City and Liver­pool, Man­chester Uni­ted con­tin­ued their poor form wi­th a 1-0 loss to Shef­field Uni­ted on Box­ing day 1973. Lou Ma­cari head­ed The Reds in front af­ter a mere sev­en min­utes, on­ly for Eng­land U23 in­ter­na­tion­al To­ny Cur­rie to equal­ise for The Blades in the 26th min­ute, and in the sec­ond pe­riod Alan Wood­ward fin­ished off a counter-at­tack to make it 2-1 to the vis­it­ing si­de wi­th some fif­teen min­utes re­maining of the mat­ch. Man­chester Uni­ted tried des­per­ately to level the score dur­ing the clos­ing sta­ges, but were denied by for­mer Old Traf­ford shot stop­per John Con­naughton on each and every oc­ca­sion.
