Manchester United succumbed to a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Sheffield United on Boxing Day 1973 in what was George Best´s penultimate game at Old Trafford. Lou Macari gave the hosts the upper hand early on, but goals by Tony Currie and Alan Woodward saw the visitors emerge victorious.
Following defeats against Coventry City and Liverpool, Manchester United continued their poor form with a 1-0 loss to Sheffield United on Boxing day 1973. Lou Macari headed The Reds in front after a mere seven minutes, only for England U23 international Tony Currie to equalise for The Blades in the 26th minute, and in the second period Alan Woodward finished off a counter-attack to make it 2-1 to the visiting side with some fifteen minutes remaining of the match. Manchester United tried desperately to level the score during the closing stages, but were denied by former Old Trafford shot stopper John Connaughton on each and every occasion.
