The Man­chester Reds, who came in­to this fix­ture on the back of a 3-0 FA Cup Fifth Ro­und win over Der­by Coun­ty at Pride Park, mo­ved ahead when a free-kick from Bruno Fer­nandes fou­nd An­thony Mar­tial who­se sub­sequent shot slipped thro­ugh the grasp of Eder­son and in­to the net on the ha­lf-hour. Man­chester Uni­ted con­tin­ued to main­tain the ma­jor­ity of pos­ses­sion and con­stantly threat­ened the de­fence of their op­pon­ents, on­ly to go in at the ha­lf-time break wi­th a nar­row 1-0 lead. Pep Guar­diola must have said a few words of wis­dom dur­ing the in­ter­val be­cause Man­chester City came more in­to pro­ceed­ings in the sec­ond frame, but the vis­it­ors were not able to cap­it­al­ise on their chances and were pun­ished ag­ain when the hap­less Eder­son ma­naged to throw the ball straight at the legs of Scott Mc­Tom­inay, who sent a long-ran­ge ef­fort in­to the goal wi­th just a few sec­onds left.
