Man United 2 Man City 2
Manchester United 2 Manchester City 2, Old Trafford, English Football League First Division, March 22, 1986. Manchester United were held to a disappointing draw by Manchester City. The Reds were leading 2-0 by the 58th minute of the game, but two late goals salvaged a point for The Citizens.
High-flying Manchester United, who had demolished Manchester City 3-0 at Maine Road in the reverse encounter of the 1985-86 season, moved ahead in the match when former England U21 international midfielder Colin Gibson unleashed a ferocious low shot which went past the outstretched arms of away goalkeeper Eric Nixon and into the bottom right corner of the net in the second minute. Manchester United increased their advantage thirteen minutes into the second period thanks to Gordon Strachan who beat Nixon with a well-taken penalty-kick after Peter Davenport had been brought down by Manchester City defender Nicky Reid inside the eighteen-yard box, but the men in red shirts were pegged back twice as Clive Wilson found the net in the 71st minute and Scotland international Arthur Albiston scored an own goal two minutes later. Manchester United Team: Chris Turner, Paul McGrath, Mark Higgins, Colin Gibson, Michael Duxbury, Arthur Albiston, Gordon Strachan, Mark Hughes, Peter Barnes, Peter Davenport, Norman Whiteside.
