The Reds were lead­ing 2-0 by the 58th min­ute of the ga­me, but two late goals salvaged a point for The Citizens.

High-fly­ing Man­chester Uni­ted, who had de­mol­ished Man­chester City 3-0 at Maine Road in the re­verse en­counter of the 1985-86 sea­son, mo­ved ahead in the mat­ch when for­mer Eng­land U21 in­ter­na­tion­al mid­fielder Co­lin Gib­son un­leashed a fe­ro­cious low shot which went pa­st the out­stretched arms of away goal­keeper Eric Nix­on and in­to the bot­tom right cor­ner of the net in the sec­ond min­ute. Man­chester Uni­ted in­creased their ad­vant­age thir­teen min­utes in­to the sec­ond pe­riod thanks to Gor­don Stra­chan who be­at Nix­on wi­th a well-taken pen­alty-kick af­ter Pe­ter Dav­en­port had be­en bro­ught down by Man­chester City de­fender Nicky Re­id in­side the eight­een-yard box, but the men in red shirts were pegged back twice as Clive Wil­son fou­nd the net in the 71st min­ute and Scot­land in­ter­na­tion­al Ar­thur Al­bis­ton sco­red an own goal two min­utes la­ter.
