Saint-Etienne and Manchester United drew 1-1 in a game marred by severe crowd violence. Gordon Hill handed United the lead on 78 minutes, only for Christian Synaeghel to equalise for Saints a mere two minutes later.
Manchester United, now managed by ex-Leyton Orient, Chelsea, and Queens Park Rangers supremo Dave Sexton, had defeated Birmingham City, Coventry City, and Derby County, drawn against Ipswich Town, and lost to Arsenal and Manchester City in their six opening fixtures of the 1977-78 campaign. Unfortunately, the European Cup Winners´ Cup match at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard in the Massif Central city of Saint-Etienne was overshadowed by massive fighting between the two sets of supporters. In front of more than 33,000 spectators, Sexton´s United side went into a 1-0 advantage when Three Lions international winger Gordon Hill beat Saint-Etienne shot stopper Ivan Curkovic in the 78th minute of the encounter, but the men in green shirts managed to level the scores thanks to a goal from France midfielder Christian Synaeghel with less than ten minutes left of normal time.
