Gor­don Hill han­ded Uni­ted the lead on 78 min­utes, on­ly for Chris­ti­an Syn­ae­ghel to equal­ise for Saints a mere two min­utes la­ter.

Man­chester Uni­ted, now ma­naged by ex-Ley­ton Ori­ent, Chel­sea, and Queens Park Ran­gers su­premo Dave Sex­ton, had de­feated Birm­ing­ham City, Cov­entry City, and Der­by Coun­ty, drawn ag­ainst Ips­wich To­wn, and lost to Arsen­al and Man­chester City in their six open­ing fix­tures of the 1977-78 cam­paign. Un­for­tu­nately, the Euro­pean Cup Win­ners´ Cup mat­ch at the St­ade Geof­froy-Guichard in the Mas­sif Cent­ral city of Saint-Etienne was over­shad­owed by mas­sive fight­ing be­tween the two sets of sup­port­ers. In front of more than 33,000 spec­tat­ors, Sexton´s Uni­ted si­de went in­to a 1-0 ad­vant­age when Three Li­ons in­ter­na­tion­al wing­er Gor­don Hill be­at Saint-Etienne shot stop­per Ivan Curkovic in the 78th min­ute of the en­counter, but the men in green shirts ma­naged to level the scores thanks to a goal from Fran­ce mid­fielder Chris­ti­an Syn­ae­ghel wi­th less than ten min­utes left of nor­mal time.
